Little Minnesota in WWII

Jill and Deane Johnson will launch Little Minnesota in World War II at Beagle and Wolf on September 23.

Jill and Deane Johnsons’ latest book tells the stories of 140 Minnesota men who died in World War II. The men all came from the tiny towns featured in the Johnsons’ first book, Little Minnesota. The stories, which are accompanied by photographs, letters, and family recollections, are both inspiring and nostalgic.

Join us as we celebrate the publication of Little Minnesota in World War II. Copies of the Johnson’s earlier books, Little Minnesota and The Best of Itasca will also be available, as well as cards made from Deane’s Itasca photographs.

Little Minnesota Tour

Signing Little Minnesota in Cambridge

Little Minnesota toured the northwestern part of the state during the last week in August, 2015.  Warren, Greenbush, Hallock, Thief River Falls, Red Lake Falls, Roseau, and Warroad were the lucky towns of the northwest.

Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center, Itasca State Park

We are still booking fall events for Little Minnesota and Deane’s book The Best of Itasca: A Guide to Minnesota’s Oldest State Park. The Best of Itasca features stories from the park’s history that connect with some of our favorite trails.  Presentations can be tailored to a time format of 30 minutes to 2 hours, and can focus on any of the topics covered in the book:  hiking, skiing, biking, camping, lodging, history, or a combination of any of these.  The powerpoint format allows us to use historic photographs,  maps, and photos of the trails and natural treasures of the park as they are today to enrich your future Itasca experience.  Last year we spent a lot of time on Itasca history and park development, but this year’s talks will focus on scenic and natural wonders and how they relate to the early days of the park.  “Best of Itasca:  What not to miss!”

Deane has presented to everyone from Sons of Norway to several groups of school-age children, so there is no age barrier!

During our Little Minnesota presentations we are talking about small towns throughout the state, and have been adapting our talk and choices of towns to fit the region and interests of the audience.

Best of Itasca: What not to miss!

Old Timers Cabin is on Dr. Roberts Trail. This portion of the trail is ADA accessible.

During this special photographic tour of the highlights of the park, we will visit some of my favorite spots and tell some favorite stories.  Perhaps I will even let slip with a secret or two.  Don’t miss it!
